Bowen Island Municipality is seeking a volunteer to serve on the Board of Variance. While under the auspices of the Municipality, the Board of Variance is independent of Council. The primary role of the Board is to consider minor variance applications that seek exemptions to zoning restrictions in siting, dimensions or size requirements (side yard, front, back, height and area coverage) where compliance with the Bowen Islands Municipality’s Land Use Bylaw would result in hardship. Section 542 of the Local Government Act outlines the criteria by which Board members arrive at their determinations.
The Board of Variance meets upon referral, usually three to six times per year during the day, in Council Chambers, for approximately one hour. Preparation for meetings include review of staff reports, site plans, and variance applications, along with a site visit.
