Short Term Rental Update

Regular Council Meeting
June 24, 2024 at 1:00 pm

On March 25, Bowen Island Municipal Council made the decision to “opt in” to the new provincial regulations for short-term rentals. This provincial requirement will, effective November 1, 2024, mean that a short-term rental accommodation must not be provided except in the property host’s principal residence or in a single secondary dwelling on the same property.

At that March 25 meeting Council also directed staff to prepare amendments to municipal bylaws to match the new provincial requirements.

Accordingly, at the June 24, 2024 meeting staff will seek First Reading of bylaws to amend the Land Use Bylaw, Business Licence Bylaw, and Bylaw Notice Enforcement Bylaw to include a principal residence requirement for short term rental accommodation. The proposed bylaws would also include the introduction of an application fee for business licences to cover the cost of processing and reviewing applications.
