Residential Indoor Wood Burning
Metro Vancouver requires Bowen Island users of indoor wood burning appliances to make a declaration that they’ll follow best burning practices on the island.
Bowen Island is outside of Metro Vancouver’s Urban Containment Boundary, so islanders are not required to register their wood burning devices.
If you’ve not yet made your best burning practices declaration, you must do so before September 15, 2025.
Best wood burning practices are:
- Burn only clean seasoned wood, manufactured logs, or pellets
- Never burn garbage, plastic, or treated wood
- Keep fires small and hot, and avoid smoldering
- No visible smoke except when starting a fire
- Maintain and inspect your device regularly
