How to tell if an email from the municipality is legit?
Scammers impersonate individuals, businesses and organizations to get access to your personal information or to get money from you.
BIM is aware of a spam email that tries to impersonate the Municipality, and offers a list of contacts for sale.
How to protect yourself from spam email:
- The senders name and email don’t match. All BIM emails come from @bimbc.ca
- The subject is non-specific or doesn’t match the content
- The greeting is non-specific or conjugated e.g. Dear Customer or Dear johnsmith23
- The content seems odd or urgent e.g. “hey mom, I lost my wallet” or “we’re about to close your account”
- The email requests money for something unexpected
- The email asks for personal information such as date of birth, social insurance number or banking details
How to recognize an email from BIM:
- All emails from BIM staff will be from @bimbc.ca and will have a standard BIM signature including our phone number at the bottom of the email.
