Playcare, one of Community Recreation’s favorite programs, offers weekday morning child-minding for preschoolers, where little ones make friends, learn to play together, and grow with the guidance of our wonderful care team!
Playcare is one of Bowen Island Community Recreation’s most beloved programs, offering weekday morning child-minding for preschool-aged children. This program is carefully crafted to support young children as they learn to socialize, make friends, navigate transitions, and play cooperatively. While Playcare is not a full-time childcare program, it is designed to help children build pro-social skills, preparing them for the more structured settings of preschool or kindergarten. Our dedicated and experienced care providers — Sharon Sluggett, Rebecca Ander, and Kathy Driscoll — bring a wealth of training and experience, offering developmentally informed, supportive care that encourages each child’s growth.
Schedule
September – June
- Session 1: 9:15 am – 10:45 am
- Session 2: 10:45 am – 12:15 pm
- Note: You can register for both sessions and leave your child for the full 3 hours
- Playcare does not run on statutory holidays or professional development days
There is no Playcare during July and August

$10 per 1.5 hour session

All children new to Playcare must first complete a series of free trial sessions before registering for full drop-off sessions. Please follow these steps if you are new to Playcare:
- Create an account for yourself and your child on our site.
- Book a trial visit: Contact Recreation.
- First Visit: During your first visit, your child will be introduced to the space, staff, and other children at Playcare. Depending on how settled in they are, you may leave for a short period of time.
- Next Steps: Based on the first visit, staff will either clear your child for registration or recommend additional trial sessions.
Once approved, you can book full sessions online. Feel free to contact recreation anytime with questions!
Online registration opens on Mondays at 9:00am for the following week (ie. you will be able to book the current week and following week at this time).
Please ensure all of your child’s information is up to date on your online account. You can register for one or both sessions. If you would like assistance registering you can:
- Contact Recreation by phone.
- Visit us in-person: Monday – Friday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm
All children new to Playcare must first complete a free trial period before registering for sessions. Please read the “New to Playcare?” tab and contact Recreation for more information and to arrange.
- Plenty of snacks & lunch, and a reusable water bottle
- Diapers & wipes as necessary – please pack extra, and re-stock each day
- 1 full change of clothes – accidents do happen
- Clothing and layers suitable for the weather – we go outside often
- March through October: Sunscreen and hat
- A backpack for your child to carry it all in
- Please avoid sending special toys
