Mayor Andrew Leonard joined Vancouver City Councillor Rebecca Bligh and Park Board commissioners Brennan Bastyovanszky and Laura Christensen at a special announcement to reveal plans for a new, regular electric passenger ferry service connecting Bowen Island, downtown Vancouver, and Gibsons.
“Bowen Island’s need for access to the mainland is more than just transportation—ferry service is our connection to work, healthcare, school, and everything in between.” Said Mayor Leonard. “Exploring an electric ferry isn’t just about sustainability; it’s about securing a reliable, modern, and efficient future for our Island’s residents.”
Councillor Bligh will introduce a motion directing City of Vancouver staff to move forward with the planning and implementation of the electric passenger ferry, with hopes for regular service to begin from Coal Harbour as early as 2027. At the same time, Commissioners Bastyovanszky and Christensen will put forward a motion to explore upgrades to Harbour Green Dock in Vancouver, as well as seek partners to fund the needed amenities and improvements.
The new ferry service comes in response to the growing transportation challenges faced by Bowen Island residents. As congestion increases and regional transportation options remain limited, particularly for travel to and from Bowen Island, this new electric ferry offers a much-needed solution. Following the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of hybrid work, Bowen Island has seen an influx of new residents and visitors, yet local transportation services have struggled to keep up. Existing vehicle ferry services are often overcapacity, with long wait times.
The introduction of a pollution-free electric passenger ferry promises to reduce congestion in Horseshoe Bay, Snug Cove, and Langdale, whilst providing a faster and more sustainable alternative for daily commutes.
