New Ferry Camera in Snug Cove

Bowen Island Municipality is pleased to announce that a new ferry camera has been installed at the Bowen Island Community Centre, giving residents and visitors a simple and reliable way to check how full the ferry lineup is before they even leave the house.

The camera, mounted on the front of the Community Centre, captures and updates a near–real-time still image every 30 seconds, providing a quick snapshot of current traffic conditions in The Cove. No video is recorded or stored, and the resolution is intentionally limited so that faces, licence plates, and other identifying details cannot be distinguished. The feed is used solely to provide a general sense of ferry traffic volume, with the goal of helping reduce congestion, support better travel planning, and make day-to-day commuting a little easier; supporting Council’s strategic initiatives concerning transportation planning and island livability.

A roadside view from a ferry terminal camera showing a line of vehicles waiting in two queues beside a forested hillside. Several cars are stopped along the shoulder and near a crosswalk leading toward the terminal area. A timestamp reading ‘03-03-2026 08:55:04 AM’ appears in the upper right. The foreground includes a pathway, grass, and garden beds near a building. Tall trees surround the roadway.

This project is an example of the spirit of community collaboration on Bowen Island. We extend our sincere thanks to community volunteers Dee Elliott, Tim Hausch, and Matthew van der Giessen, whose idea and initiative helped bring the ferry cam to the Municipality. Their partnership played a key role in making this useful tool a reality, and efforts like theirs remind us why we’re proud to be part of the Bowen Island community.
