Notice of Construction: Road and Sign Marking Improvements in Snug Cove

Bowen Island Municipality is pleased to announce that VIKE Construction Ltd. has been awarded the contract for the Road and Sign Marking Implementation Project. The project will improve road safety and accessibility along Bowen Island Trunk Road in the Snug Cove area and in the vicinity of the ferry terminal.

This project builds on recommendations from a 2025 Road and Sign Safety Improvement Study completed by ISL Engineering and funded by ICBC through its Road Safety Improvement Program. Funding for implementation of the project is being partially provided by ICBC and TransLink’s Operations, Maintenance and Rehabilitation (OMR) Program, supporting signage, pavement marking, accessibility, and traffic operation improvements along Bowen Island Trunk Road in Snug Cove.

Construction Schedule

Construction is anticipated to begin the week of September 8, 2026, and be substantially completed by late October 2026.

Project Improvements

The project includes:

Removal and relocation of existing signs
Installation of new regulatory, warning, and pedestrian signage
New and refreshed pavement markings, including crosswalks
Minor accessibility improvements, including tactile warning surfaces
Traffic control and associated restoration work

These improvements are intended to enhance safety and improve the experience for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists in this high-traffic area.

What to Expect During Construction

To accommodate construction activities, several temporary traffic and pedestrian access changes will be implemented in the ferry terminal area:

Bus pick-up and drop-off locations will be temporarily relocated a few parking spaces north along Cardena Road.
The existing ferry passenger drop-off area will be closed during construction and temporarily relocated to the two-hour parking area on Cardena Road, north of its current location.
Temporary crosswalks may be relocated to maintain safe pedestrian access throughout the construction zone.
There may be a temporary sidewalk closure adjacent to the lock-block retaining wall on Bowen Island Trunk Road near the ferry terminal. Alternative pedestrian routes and signage will be provided where required.

The Municipality and contractor will work to minimize disruptions and maintain safe access for residents, visitors, transit users, and ferry passengers throughout the project. Motorists and pedestrians are encouraged to follow all posted signs and traffic control personnel instructions during construction.
