Open Burning Season Ends April 15

Effective April 15, 2026, all Open Burning on Bowen Island is prohibited, except for campfires, when permitted by current fire conditions. This annual seasonal closure helps reduce the risk of wildfires as weather conditions become warmer and drier.

What Is Still Allowed After April 15?

Campfires are allowed after April 15, but only when fire conditions permit.

A campfire is strictly defined as:

  • A single pile no larger than 0.5 m x 0.5 m
  • Burning clean, dry firewood only
  • No permit required

Campfires are not always allowed and are subject to restrictions based on the Fire Danger Rating, which can change at any time. During higher fire danger ratings, campfires may be restricted or fully prohibited.

Always check the current Fire Danger Rating before lighting a campfire.

What Is Not Allowed After April 15?

All other burning is prohibited.

After April 15, the following are not permitted anywhere on Bowen Island, even with a permit:

  • Burn piles
  • Burn barrels or burn cages
  • Garden or yard waste burning
  • Land‑clearing fires
  • Bonfires

Burn permits are only issued between October 15 and April 15. Outside of that window, open burning is not permitted under any circumstances.
