This year marks a significant milestone for Bowen Island Municipality as we celebrate our 25th anniversary. An island-wide referendum that was held on June 19, 1999, led to an election on November 20 and then the incorporation of Bowen Island Municipality on December 4. Over the past quarter century, our close knit community has evolved with resilience, growth, and a strong sense of community spirit.

Lisa Barrett was elected Mayor in the November 20, 1999, election, along with Councillors Ross Carter, Peter Frinton, Alan Leigh, Alison Morse, Bob Turner, and Richard Underhill for a three-year term. Judith Gedye, then a Provincial Court Judge and now serving on our current Council, administered the oath of office.

We recognize Councillor Alison Morse, who has been elected to Council in every election since incorporation. Her dedicated service to the community has helped guide us through the many achievements and challenges we have faced over the years.

Community engagement has always been a big part of life on Bowen. Annual events like Canada Day Reimagined, Family Day celebrations, Bowfest, and Dock Dance are much loved by the community and bring residents together. The long awaited Bowen Island Community Centre will soon provide a dedicated space for recreation, arts, and social gatherings to continue those traditions.

The passion that residents feel for the island is reflected in our many spirited debates. From discussions about the creation of a National Park, to conversations about the future of Cape Roger Curtis, residents have always shown their dedication to shaping the island’s future. Despite differing opinions, the community remains united in its commitment to preserving the unique qualities that make Bowen Island home.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to all our Mayors and Councillors, both past and present. As we look ahead to the next 25 years, we know that the leadership that got us here will provide us with the foundation we need to continue evolving and growing while preserving the unique charm that makes Bowen Island home for everyone that lives here.
