Keith Campden, Emergency Communications Team

Keith has recently joined the Emergency Communications Team in a coordinator role to help maintain the emergency radio systems that will support Bowen Island by providing critical communications across the island and with the province during an emergency.

Since 1996 Keith has been a member of the Lions Bay Search and Rescue Team and has seen the changes in operations over the years. In the early days, concerned family or friends would report overdue hikers resulting in all night searches. More recently, the hikers in trouble use their cell phone to call for help which also provides a GPS location, leading to a timely helicopter extraction. With Search and Rescue coming under the same Provincial umbrella as Emergency Communications, Keith has a keen understanding of the Provincial emergency processes and procedures.

Keith gained his amateur radio certificate in 2007 and was one of the original members of the Bowen Emergency Amateur Radio System (BEARS) which has since evolved into the Emergency Communication Team.

As a keen outdoors recreationist, you may often find Keith hiking the Bowen trails or kayaking the local waters. And now that he has retired from his work as an electrical engineer, he is able to dedicate more time to volunteering and recreating on Bowen!
