Seeking Public Input

We are conducting an update to the Snug Cove Design Guidelines

The current Design Guidelines for Snug Cove were prepared by the Bowen Island Advisory Design Panel and were released as part of the Land Use Bylaw. These guidelines, like the update, focus on the theme of Arts & Crafts Design and Architecture. An update began back in 2020, however due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the project ended up being put on hold. It has been re-started in Spring 2024.

What do the Snug Cove Design Guidelines do?

These guidelines will guide development in the Snug Cove area (see map), particularly with respect to its character and public function.

Bowen Island is distinct in its rustic feel and relaxed “getaway” vibe. It has long served as a tranquil home, a strong community, and a spirited playground for its residents and visitors. Being close to nature and full of inspiration, Bowen has developed a unique character and sense of place. Snug Cove is the gateway to Bowen Island, characterized by a “village in the park” feel and its Arts & Crafts character. Snug Cove hosts the ferry access point and commercial core as well as civic functions and residential areas. The design, look, and feel of the Cove should reflect all of this.

The Snug Cove Design Guidelines intend to affirm an Arts & Crafts approach to development while also encouraging creative design, complementary aesthetics, and retention of the distinctly Bowen character.

Who does this Impact?

The Snug Cove Design Guidelines document applies to the Development Permit Areas shown in the map above. Any new development within these areas will need to demonstrate compliance with the proposed new guidelines and obtain a development permit.
