As per Metro Vancouver’s Indoor Residential Woodburning Bylaw indoor residential woodburning is only permitted from September 15 to May 15 each year.

Metro Vancouver requires Bowen Island users of indoor residential wood burning appliances to make a declaration that they’ll follow best burning practices on the island.

Bowen Island is outside of Metro Vancouver’s Urban Containment Boundary, so islanders are NOT required to register their wood burning devices.

Best wood burning practices are:

  • Burn only clean seasoned wood, manufactured logs, or pellets
  • Never burn garbage, plastic, or treated wood
  • Keep fires small and hot, and avoid smoldering
  • No visible smoke except when starting a fire
  • Maintain and inspect your device regularly
