Throughout December, Islanders look forward to seasonal festivities such as performances, choir concerts, solstice celebrations and community gatherings. Many of these cherished activities will have a new home next year in the Community Centre, along with the return of a classic Bowen play. |
“We can’t wait to book the dates for the return of Mad Mabel’s Christmas,” says Jackie Minns, co-artistic director, along with her husband, David Cameron, of the local professional indie theatre company, King Baby Productions. “As soon as we can, we’ll be scheduling performances at the new Community Centre,” promises Jackie, who is not only a director, but an actor, producer and writer. |
Many Bowen Islanders fondly remember the heartwarming tale of Mad Mabel. The story follows a young girl who discovers the true meaning of the holiday season with the help of an eccentric mysterious woman. For several years, King Baby presented the entertaining and musical show to sold-out audiences, who made it an annual tradition. Islanders even followed the production to off-island venues. With a professionally equipped performing arts auditorium, Mad Mabel’s Christmas will once again spread spirit and goodwill right here on the island.“Excitement is growing as construction nears completion,” says Frazer Elliot, Community Centre Joint Management Committee (JMC), a local thespian, producer and member of Theatre on the Isle. The JMC, including members of the Community Recreational department, are considering how best to accommodate the range of programming and scheduling needs of any array of groups eager to utilize the Community Centre.“We‘re looking forward to scheduling performances and presentations year-round and welcoming audiences into the new space,” adds Frazer. |
Completion date The general contractor has provided a construction completion date of mid to late April. This is exciting as it makes things a little more real in terms of planning a move in date. |
