Candidate for the Offices of Councillor and Islands Trustee
I love Bowen and have been deeply involved in community life here, contributing to and leading projects and committees for over thirty years. In 1992 I began as a daily commuter and renter. My husband and I raised our son on Bowen and we run our consulting company from our home, near Collins Farm.
Future: I hope Bowen will look much the same. Lots of trees, leafy nature and wildlife, including herons and whales; all sorts of people active in community life and on the trails and beaches. This vision is similar to the one in our current official community plan, for which I chaired the steering committee. A small, friendly, caring community, sharing a unique island lifestyle and supported by well-protected natural ecosystems. That’s what I’m working toward. Nature and Community.
Bowen Council: Serving twelve years as municipal councillor has been an honour. Hoping to support the ongoing process of renewing our official community plan as well; so important for the ongoing slow, managed growth.
Besides regular council meetings, and items I bring to those agendas, I have been part of the Parks Environment and Climate Action Committee since the mid-90s. I also serve on the emergency program to advisory design panel, library board, the Biosphere’s Ocean Watch Action Committee and the Marine Planning Circle.
Islands Trust: To be part of the federation of islands in the Salish Sea “entrusted” with the mission to protect this special part of the world is wonderful. When a large unpopular campground was proposed for Cape Roger Curtis recently, the Islands Trust found it to be contrary to a key Islands Trust policy, and the application was withdrawn.
This policy, Trust Policy Statement, is being updated, adding reconciliation, housing, and climate change elements. I hope to support the ongoing process in the coming term. Currently I chair the financial planning committee and serve on the trust programs and CAO evaluation committees. Over the past twelve years as a trustee I relished the opportunity to protect the trust area’s beauty, wildlife and unique island communities through Trust Council. Happy to chat about the Trust’s benefits to Bowen.
Collaboration: Central to the way I work. I enjoy bringing people together towards a better future for all, including nature. In previous terms I have served as vice-chair of Islands Trust Conservancy, as a vice-chair of Islands Trust, chaired local trust committees on Gambier-Keats, Denman and Hornby, and ten years on the BC Municipal Climate Leadership Council. On Bowen I have served on transportation, internet connectivity, on-island composting, sewer, communications, and proud to have been on the committee that developed the accessibility plan.
