British Columbia continues to face a high risk of adverse effects on both people and the environment because of severe drought conditions last year.
Our community must reduce its water use.
All municipal water districts are currently on Stage 3 Water Conservation Guidelines. The Province of BC is at Drought Level 3 and requesting that all water users, including those on private water systems, wells, or with water licenses for lakes and creeks, reduce their water consumption.
We must ensure that we have adequate supply for people to drink, to minimize ecological harm and to ensure we have the resources to protect ourselves from fire.
Saving water is a shared responsibility, especially during droughts. Even small changes can make a significant impact when we all work together. Prompt action leads to quicker recovery.
Key tips to reduce water use around the home:
- Take shorter showers – shortening by one minute saves up to 2,700 litres a year
- Turn off the tap when brushing or shaving – save up to 8,300 litres a year
- Fix leaky toilets – save up to 350,000 litres per year
- Skip the car wash – save up to 260 litres per vehicle
- Run full loads of laundry – save up to 200 litres per load
- Fill the sink if washing by hand
- Keep a jug of cool water in the fridge instead of running the tap
- Collect rainwater or reuse the water you use to wash vegetables for plants
- Plant drought tolerant yards and gardens
- Clean outside with a broom instead of a hose
- Check all plumbing and hoses for leaks
Save our water. Every drop counts.
