Drilling in The Cove

Chevron Corporation is conducting a soil sampling program in the area surrounding the corner of Bowen Island Trunk Road and Cardena Drive as part of environmental remediation on land that was previously used as a fuel storage facility.

As part of the program, drilling will be taking place at a number of predetermined locations in the roadway from October 15, 2024. Drilling equipment consists of a pickup truck sized drilling vehicle and a similarly sized vacuum truck that work in tandem.  Each hole takes approximately 6 hours to drill.

Bowen Island Municipality has confirmed that Chevron Corporation’s Traffic Control Plan ensures that:

  • Adequate flagging staff will be on site to direct traffic and will marshal the ferry lineup from beginning to end with guidance from BIM.
  • Two lanes will always be available for ferry unloading.
  • No lane closures or work will occur on weekdays before 7:30am or after 3:15pm to accommodate student pick-up/drop-off and school bus access.
  • The 15 minute pick-up/drop-off parking spaces on Cardena Drive will remain available during all pick-up/drop-off times.
  • The TransLink bus stop will remain operational on Cardena Drive but may be moved further down the road as needed to allow for drilling.
