Biography
Sue Ellen began her nature work as a wildlife field technician in Northern Ontario, Quebec and Yukon. As a biologist she helped test a planning tool for lakeshore developments so that loons, turtles, hawks, owls and songbirds could continue to delight the cottagers. At an urban nature centre and provincial and regional parks she led and designed education programs, including thousands of hours connecting children and families to nature outdoors. She wrote and hosted the television series Nature Walk across Canada, the US and Central America with Bowen documentary filmmakers. Roles as journal editor, executive director and consultant followed.
In 1992, Sue Ellen moved to Bowen and began as a daily commuter and renter. She contributed to and led various projects and committees, including opening public access to some of Bowen’s best beaches. She and her husband raised their son on Bowen and run their consulting company from their home, near Collins Farm. Sue Ellen was first elected to Council and Islands Trust in 2014. She has since served on more committees ranging from internet to emergency planning, Islands Trust Conservancy to library board, and communications to transportation. Closest to her heart is the Parks, Trails and Greenways committee, which she has usually been part of since the mid-90s.
