Biography
John is a first time Councillor making his initial foray into politics. He comes from a military family, and lived across Canada, the US, and Europe growing up. John received his BA in Political Science from Acadia in 1980 and went on to play professional hockey for a period. He subsequently joined the RCMP and served for twelve years in various postings in Saskatchewan. John moved to Vancouver in the mid-90’s and eventually opened his own security consulting business. That business thrives today, with clients across Canada and the US, focusing primarily on infrastructure security and resilience, and emergency planning. John also went back to school to receive his Masters focusing on counter-terrorism work in 2011. He continues to play golf and hockey in his spare time and reads everything he can get his hands on. Travel to all parts of the work and hiking and camping are passions.
John and his wife Nicolette moved to Bowen in the summer of 2020. One of the first things that was noticeable about the island life was the level of community engagement found here, and it is that feature that encouraged him to run in this past election. He brings a passion for “just getting it done” to the job and believes his experience in infrastructure projects will be a very useful addition to the range of experience and talents on council. He prides himself on being able to identify the core of any problem, and to be able to work well with others in achieving solutions that are agreeable to all parties. John is looking forward to working closely with the Mayor, Council, and everyone on the island to help make this community everything we want it to be.
