The bridge on Carter Road has reached the end of its serviceable life and is due for replacement. Carter Road will have to be closed during bridge replacement throughout the summer of 2024.

When is this happening?

Construction is scheduled to start June 24 and is estimated to finish by September 4, 2024.

Work will happen Monday to Friday between 7:00 am and 8:00 pm (in accordance with the Noise Control Bylaw).

What to expect

The road will be closed to vehicle traffic on both sides of the bridge between 661 and 650 Carter Rd (Cates Hill Chapel to Bowen Children’s Centre). Construction vehicles, workers and noise will be present on Carter Road on both sides of the construction area.

Pedestrians may use the hiking trail below the construction area to cross.

Where is the alternate access route?

Carter Road Construction

There is an alternate access route for the properties west of the bridge starting from the gravel section of Carter Rd at Mount Gardner Rd. Temporary traffic lights will be operating during construction for the alternate access at the top and bottom of Carter Rd at Mount Gardner, as well as detour signage posted at both Carter Rd at Mount Gardner and Carter Rd at Grafton.

The alternate access route is unpaved, single lane alternating, includes a steep grade and a tight hairpin bend. This may not be suitable for large delivery vehicles, trucks and buses that are unused to the terrain.

Construction vehicles will enter from Carter Rd at Grafton Rd because the alternate access is not suitable for large vehicles.

Bowen Island’s Emergency first responders have been notified and have confirmed that their emergency vehicles including police, fire and ambulance will be able to access all properties.
